Spicy Sloppy Joes

These ground beef and sausage sloppy joes, sauteed with onion, garlic, celery and bell pepper in a sweet and spicy sauce, make a quick and easy weeknight meal. Turn up the heat with a dash of hot pepper sauce, if you like.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
- 1 stalk celery, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound Italian sausage
- 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle chili sauce
- 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
Cooking Instructions
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion, green bell pepper, celery, garlic and oregano. Saute for 5 minutes, or until onion is tender. Transfer this mixture to a plate and reserve for later.
- In the same skillet over medium high heat, combine the ground beef and sausage and saute for 10 minutes, or until well browned. Add reserved onion mixture, chili sauce, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and brown sugar and mix well. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
