Easy Cookie Decorating

Decorative Cookie Dusting

By Wendy Kalen

Dusting is one of the easiest and versatile ways to decorate cookies. Many different foods can be used, either alone or in combination with other foods.

Dusting Materials for Decorating Cookies:

  • Cocoa
  • Granulated sugar
  • Colored sugars
  • Ground nuts
  • Edible dust
  • Spices
  • Confectioners’ sugar

How to Decorate Cookies by Dusting:

All the suggestions for foods to dust with are for unbaked cookies, with the exception of confectioners’ sugar, which will melt when baked.

  1. Cover a sheet pan with waxed paper.
  2. Place wire rack on waxed paper and cookies on the rack.
  3. Sift the topping over the cookie using a sieve or sifter that works for the chosen dusting material.
  4. Lightly tap the sieve/sifter with your free hand over the area you want dusted.

Tips for Decorating Cookies by Dusting:

  • A second dusting may be required.
  • If only one dusting material was used, rather than a combination, then you can return unused dusting material to its original package.
